It is a fact: defibrillators are needed in order to restart a heart that has gone into sudden cardiac arrest. For every minute that passes, the victim becomes more likely to suffer from permanent brain damage, if he or she is lucky enough to survive. An AED can not only be used by nearly anyone, it can also lengthen the lifespan of victims of coronary events.
The American Heart Association:
"To date, nothing can restart a stopped heart except an electric shock. When a person suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, for each minute that passes without defibrillation their chance of survival decreases by 7-10 percent. AEDs save lives!"
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
"Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) improve survival after an out-of-hospital arrest. Their presence reduces the critical time for treatment. Less time to defibrillation improves victims' chances of survival."
U.S. Food and Drug Administration
"[An AED] is a life-saving device because cardiac arrest is a sudden condition that is fatal if not treated within a few minutes."
The American Academy of Pediatrics
"Early defibrillation has been shown to be the most effective treatment for adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest attributable to ventricular fibrillation. The likelihood of survival decreases by approximately 7% to 10% with each minute of delay to defibrillation after cardiac arrest. Strategies to decrease the time to defibrillation that have been shown to be effective include the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) by pre-hospital care providers and nonmedical personnelAlthough the incidence of VF in the pediatric population is low, there is a need for developing strategies to provide early defibrillation to patients younger than 8 years."
